One the most breathtaking plane views you can experience in Greece is looking down on Astypalea. It is considered a jewel in the Dodecanese island chain. The castle or kastro tops the cascading hilltop chora where whitewashed buildings create a picturesque contrast against the island landscape and the blue sea.
The castle takes up the entire plateau at the top of the hill. It was once a group of houses which made up the settlement dating back to the Mid Ages. Inside the castle, between the scattered columns and the carved stones, two beautiful churches stand: Panagia of Castro (the Holy Virgin of the Castle) and Agios Giorgios (Saint George).
The church of Panagia Portaitissa constitutes the religious center of the island and the most renowned and visited spot of worship. Construction began in 1762 by Saint Anthimos from Kefalonia. The church is the most important Orthodox pilgrimage site of the island because the icon of Panagia Portaitissa, the Guardian of the hearth, is safely kept inside its walls. This icon is a replica of the same icon from the monastery of Iviron on Mount Athos.
The religious community starts festivities each year on the 14th of August. On August 15th, when Panagia Portaitissa is celebrated, a big festival takes place on the island.
The island features some of the best beaches of the Dedocanese.
