New UK Travel Requirement Starting 2025

From 2025, anyone traveling to the United Kingdom must obtain a UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) prior to their trip, unless exempt. Below is a summary of key details about the UK ETA and what you need to know before traveling.

What is the UK ETA?

The UK ETA is a new entry requirement for travelers from certain countries, similar to the ESTA for the USA or the ETA for Canada.

Who Needs to Apply?

  • EU Nationals: Applications open on 5 March 2025 for travel to the UK on or after 2 April 2025.
  • Non-EU Nationals: Those from visa-free countries need either a UK ETA or a visa, depending on the purpose and length of their visit. Check the UK Government website for specific requirements. Applications are open now for travel on or after 8 January 2025.

Exemptions: Travelers with a British or Irish passport, diplomats, and individuals already granted permission to enter or stay in the UK do not need a UK ETA.

Key Information

  • Validity: A UK ETA lasts for two years and allows stays of up to 6 months. It is valid for entry by air, land, and sea.
  • Fee: £10 (approximately 13 USD).
  • Processing Time: Typically issued within three working days.
  • Traveling with Children: Each family member, regardless of age, needs their own UK ETA.
  • Passport Requirements: A new UK ETA is required if you renew your passport. Always travel with the passport linked to your UK ETA.
